“What tribes are, is a very simple concept that goes back 50 million years. It’s about leading and connecting people and ideas. And it’s something that people have wanted forever” said by Seth Godin. University School of Law and Legal Studies organized a one day seminar for the students on the topic Tribal Issues and Laws: Contemporary Scenario. The seminar held on 31 October 2014 was to make law students aware about tribal society and issues simultaneously evaluating students for their research and writing skills. As we all know India is one of those few countries where tribal people still exist and are constantly neglected. They are deprived of basic amenities, infrastructure, education, income and health. Due to low education, awareness and no access to the global world, these tribal people are falling prey for the Nuxalism and Maoism.

The seminar tried to cover the following themes:

  • Indigenous/customary rights.
  • IPR and patent issue: international conventions and their impact on tribal people.
  • Customary laws of tribal in India.
  • Impact of government policies/laws, developments endeavour of private parties and government and commercialization in tribal areas.
  • Issues of displacement and result and discontent among the tribals: role of various NGOs in this regard.
  • Tribal/indigenous uprisings since the colonial period are context of Naxalism in contemporary India: reasons and tentative issues.

Nuxalism in contemporary India: reasons and tentative issues. The seminar was a good attempt to raise the issues of neglected tribal population and it’s high time that the law students should turn their focus on such neglected issues as well.
